How to move a piano?

Firstly, we would never suggest attempting to move a piano yourself. It takes a team of trained operatives, the correct apparatus and experience to move and care for a piano.

How we move a piano

1. Ensure the path to exit and entry is clear, measures and door frames and sharp edges are secured with tape where necessary. Clear any obstructions such as rugs, coat stands and pets!

2. Wrap the piano and ensure the lid is secured with tape and soft fabric to avoid it moving or popping up at an inopportune moment.

3. Using a dolly, lift the piano. A stand up piano weighs more than 140kg, whilst a grand piano can weigh over half a tonne. This means that you need a team of experienced people to lift the piano; do not attempt to do this on your own! 

4. Secure the piano with dolly straps.

5. Use a combination of ramps and lifting straps to move and lift the piano onto the vehicle to be moved to the new location. 

6. Once secure on the lorry, the piano is then secured in place to ensure there is zero chance of it moving during transit. 

Moving a grand piano is similar, although larger, and has some notable additions to the process, which we are expert in executing. Notably, these include:

Removing the lid if possible, by removing the hinge pins, and the screws on the plate that hold the pins. Remove and wrap the lid carefully.

Identify leg 1 (labelled) and remove it. Wrap and then remove other legs carefully,

Cover the entire piano in moving blankets.

Find out which piano leg is labelled as number 1 and remove it. Place gently the piano so its board cover rests on a thick and soft tissue, previously laid on the floor at the side of leg 1.

Transport to the vehicle, having covered the floor of the vehicle with moving blankets, secure firmly and your grand piano is ready to move to its new home!
