We have compiled a list of top tips for Packing when Moving to A New House
1. Do not put all your heavy items in the same box.
It is an obvious point, but one that is often overlooked. It is so easy to just pop one more thing in the box, then another, and then before you know it you have a slipped disc, or even worse, you struggle with the box down the stairs, out the front door, only for the bottom of the box to break as you watch the contents cascade over the front lawn. Rather than take chances, try to use more boxes, rather than cram it all in as few boxes as possible. Which leads onto the second point…
2. Pack heavy items with light.
Mix it up! By putting soft furnishings in with the heavy items, you will be dispersing the weight across the boxes and therefore make it easier to lift, easier to transport, and remove any risk of the box breaking. Also, always pack the heavier items on the bottom when packing for moving to a new house, with the lighter items on top.
3. Use decent packing tape.
We can provide you with tape and boxes, but if you choose to go with a different supplier, go with quality rather than looking for the cheapest. Also, look for wide tape rather than flimsy, narrow tape. Trust us, you will not regret it! If you are looking after particularly fragile items, then also look at double walled boxes.
4. Wardrobe boxes
Wardrobe boxes are particularly useful as they allow you to hang your clothes in transport. Let us face it, nobody wants to go through a huge house move, only to then must face a pile of ironing at the other end!
5. Newspapers are useful for moving to a new house
Start reading the news way in advance of your house move. Not only will you be able to keep an eye on world affairs, but you will also have something to wrap your china and cutlery in. Of course, we would suggest the daddy of all packing material, bubble wrap, for valuable or fragile items, but for everything else, why not wrap them in paper. Use it to scrunch up and fill gaps in a box to stop things rattling also.
6. Do not lay plates flat
This sounds counter-intuitive; however, it makes perfect sense as the strength is when they are stacked on the edge as you would stack your old vinyl records. If you lay plates flat, as soon as you put pressure on the top of the box – not advised but it happens, then the plates are liable to break.
7. Label, Label, and label
A black permanent marker or sharpie is a must when packing up for a house move. Most people will have dozens of boxes and therefore, it is helpful to know what is in each box for a couple of reasons. First, you know where everything is. Second, you can mark particularly heavy boxes as such to help the moving team. Thirdly, you can distribute the boxes in the appropriate rooms at the other end to help streamline the unpacking process.
8. Prepare for your first night
Ensure that bedding, toothbrushes, and toiletries are packed last and that they are easily accessible.
9. Keep some potential essential to one side
Useful accessories to help with a house move include:
Tea/coffee
Kettle
Toilet Roll
Screwdriver
Medicines
Food / Pet food
Spare set clothes
Phone charger
10. Make sure you pack some champagne and chocolates
A must have for your first night in your first home!
